1.     Introduction

There are becoming more and more people prefer to become a flight attendant nowadays. According the news in 2003, China Airline received a lot of application of flight attendant in Taiwan. There are totally around 5000 of application. And the application number is growing every year. But why so many people want to become a flight attendant? Many of people imagine that flight attendant is a job that can take cheap ticket, can go travel by free, also because of the high salary. However, flight attendant is not an easy job. Although there are many attractive points that make a lot of people applicate this job, number of resignations seriously increasing every year. Many people see the work of flight attendant easier than others job. Actually, the work is very hard and complicated. Flight attendant need large physical demand.

Flight attendant normally need three kinds of qualities. Firstly, training is the necessary way for someone who want to become a flight attendant. In this training, they can learn a lot of lesson about first aid, survive and service. Secondly, multinational language is beneficial to this job. The more language you can speak, the better it will be for flight attendant. There are many passengers from different countries so, flight attendant need to response their demand in any situation. It is better that you know more language. Thirdly, height and health are job needs. There are some airlines required height 160 or higher than 160. Also, flight attendant is a job which cost a lot of physical strength.

 

2.     Job Description

Flight attendant mainly responsible to ensure flight safety and Guide passengers in any emergency. The subsidiary work is to serve passengers and satisfy their demand. They are also a position that represent their airline company. That is why flight attendant need to have graceful, sedate manner. In order to represent a good image to passengers, flight attendant responsible to receive serious training before they become professional. The training normally about makeup, customers service, swimming, flight safety and exit. Those skills are all very important to a flight attendant.

3.  Advantages of being a flight attendant

There are many advantages of being a flight attendant. This a reason why there are a lot of people applicated this job. The first one is flexible work hour, flight attendant work shift so, you can choose any time you want. You can enrich themselves not only in work, but also in rest. When you off duty, you can do anything you want in the airplane or in different countries. Actually, there are many flight attendants have sideline.

The second one is high salary and cheap airplane ticket. I think there are many people was attracted to become a flight attendant by this reason. Flight attendant have a high salary. According the information, China airline’s flight attendant have salary 190 thousand a month. Not only high salary, you can also get cheap ticket that you can go travel everywhere with your family by no pressure. But it only limited blood relatives.

The last one is you can go travel everywhere which can create your own story and widen your horizon. You will need to reach a lot of places because of this job. In other way, you can hold this opportunity to travel many places you did not go before. This job can let you see more about this world. You can take many photos and videos for a memory. For me, I extremely love travel. And I think there are many of flight attendant also because of this reason so, they take this job.

4.     Disadvantages of being a flight attendant

Bad lifestyle and eating habit because of work shift. Work shift can offer you flexible working time, but it also means you will have night duty. If your duty almost at night, your lifestyle should need to change quickly. But there are many people cannot translate so fast, that hurt their body. Especially for woman, woman have period every month. Bad lifestyle (bed late, unhealthy lifestyle) will causes menstrual cycle disorder. And this is very harmful for woman.

The problem of Jet leg is also a terrible problem in the circle of flight attendant. Generally, flight attendant need to cross many countries. But every place has their own time. It is causing a lot people solve this problem by using medicine. In fact, medicine have side effect. If you take over, it will also hurt your body.

You will face a lot of difficulties in work, and it is causing big pressure. There are many trouble passengers in the airplane. The case of sexual harassment is not a small number, also mean that is being a serious problem in this industry. On the other side, you need to serve many passengers in a day. The work pressure is very big. If you are unlucky, you will meet some trouble customers.

5.     Long-term Career Development

Nowadays, there are more and more flight attendant have their sideline. For example, buy sell and clothing industry. Those sidelines becoming very popular in airline company. Because their job content can go many places so, they can buy goods in an easy way.

On the other hand, many flight attendants will resign the job after they earn their first pot of gold and start their second business. Because of the development of online shop, many of them will sell cloths in online shop (Taobao, Shopee) or social media (Facebook, Instagram).

6.     Who suits this job?

In academic way, you need to have fluent English speaking. English is an international language, there are lot of people using English especially in airport and airplane. In order to become a flight attendant, you need to have Toeic over 550. However, my interviewee said that she has gain 830 point, she still cannot speak English very good.

In person way, this job suits for someone who are sociability, outward, and independence. Flight attendant need to face many passengers in the airplane so, if you are not very social, you will have many difficulties with serving and communicate with passengers. Flight attendant is a job which very lonely because you have less chance to meet someone you know. In the airplane, you also need to do many things by yourself. You need to be independent so that you can take care yourself also passengers.  

7.     How to become a flight attendant

A blogger who are a flight attendant suggested that we need to study about flight safety (Including exit and reassure passengers and clam deal with any problems). Study about safety is very helpful after you become a flight attendant. My interviewee said that it is better to study abroad or go exchange. It will be very helpful for your English speaking. Height limit is also a point if you want to take this job. It is better that you have over 160.

Personally, I think the ability of corresponding is the key to become a flight attendant. In the airplane, there are many situations you need to deal with it. Even when you are serving a meal, if there are any problems with passengers, you need to solve it correctly and quickly.
